Parliament to elect new President on 20th July

Parliament will elect a new President on 20th July following the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Wednesday.

Party leaders met today and decided to convene Parliament on 15th July.

Nominations for the post of a new President will be accepted on 18th July and an election among MPs to pick a new President will be held on 20th July.

Meanwhile, the entire Cabinet has decided to resign after an agreement is reached on an All-Party Government.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held a discussion with the Cabinet Ministers this morning (11) at the Prime Minister’s Office.

All the Ministers who participated in the discussion were of the opinion that as soon as there is an agreement to form an All-Party Government, they are ready to hand over their responsibilities to that Government.

A number of Ministers have already submitted their resignation letters. (Colombo Gazette)
