BASL seeks immediate access to those detained

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has sought immediate access to the protesters detained at the Maharagama Police Station.
Issuing a statement, the BASL once again called on the Government and the Police to act with utmost restraint.
“I have asked the IGP to ensure that immediate access is given to Attorneys-at-Law to visit and communicate with those arrested and being detained presently at the Maharagama Police Station in terms of the Section 15(2) of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances Act No. 5 of 2018,” BASL President Saliya Pieris said.
The BASL said that those engaged in their lawful right to protest cannot be arrested.
A number of people who were protesting near Parliament were arrested by the Police today.
Digital journalist Buwanaka Perera was among those arrested and taken to the Maharagama Police station.
The Police said that nearly 12 people were arrested near Parliament.
According to the Police, the protesters were arrested over allegations they obstructed MPs from entering Parliament. (Colombo Gazette)
