Seylan Bank Islamic Banking Unit Secures Three Prestigious SLIBFI Awards for Excellence in Islamic Finance

Seylan Bank’s Islamic Banking Unit has reported three honours at the SLIBFI Awards 2025/2026, including two awards for financing energy and agricultural projects.

The bank received gold in the Deal of the Year category for financing a 10-megawatt solar power project and bronze in the same category for financing a broiler farm expansion project. Its third honour was an Individual Merit Award in the Rising Personality of the Year (Male) category.

The solar project is intended to supply electricity to Sri Lanka’s national grid. The farm financing supported an expansion in poultry production. The two deals illustrate the use of Shariah-compliant financing for businesses with different purposes and capital requirements.

Sameer Mohamed, head of Seylan Bank’s Islamic Banking Unit, credited staff, the project finance team, management and the bank’s Shariah Supervisory Board for their contributions. He described the awards as recognition of work on financing arrangements for customers and businesses.

The bank’s Islamic Banking Unit and project finance team worked on the arrangements recognised in the Deal of the Year categories. One concerned renewable energy generation, while the other was directed towards agricultural activity.

The third award recognised an individual contribution to Sri Lanka’s Islamic banking and finance sector. Together, the honours span project financing and professional achievement within the bank’s area of work.

Seylan Bank has linked the solar financing to renewable energy development and the farm expansion to agricultural growth. The bank plans to continue offering Shariah-compliant financing to businesses operating across different sectors.

The awards form part of the SLIBFI Awards 2025/2026 programme, which recognises activity in Sri Lanka’s Islamic banking and finance industry. The bank’s results place attention on the structure and purpose of the two transactions as well as the people involved in delivering them.
