Over 49,788 affected by the rain

Over 49,788 people have been affected by the?torrential?rain caused by the storm over parts of Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said today.
A DMC spokesman said that most of the affected were in the Mullaitivu district while several were affected in Gampaha as well.
In Mullaitivu 19, 785 people were affected and some 500 families had to be temporarily evacuated.
In Gampaha 15,152 people were affected by the heavy rain and just over 250 families were evacuated.
The DMC said that two people had been killed during the storm and one person was reported injured.
The DMC also said that 65 houses were fully damaged and 448 houses partially damaged as of today.
Meanwhile the Department of?Meteorology?said that the cyclonic storm still persists to the east of Sri Lanka.
It said that heavy rain and strong winds will continue in the North-central, Northern, Eastern and North-western provinces. Other areas of the island will also receive rain with heavy falls at some places.
Seas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trinconalee via Jaffna and Mullattivu will experience strong winds, very rough conditions and intermittent rain. Therefore fishing and naval community are further advised to refrain from maritime activities in these seas.
