Hemas Hospital Wattala brought together medical specialists, patients, survivors and healthcare stakeholders for a clinical symposium focused on breast health, early detection and cancer care.
Held under the theme “Empowering Care, Awareness & Hope”, the symposium formed part of the hospital’s annual Breastober initiative and was led by Dr Nissanka Jayawardhana.
Consultants including Dr Kanchana Wijjesinghe, Dr Kalum Panditharathne, Dr Nissanka Jayawardhana, Dr Ajith De Silva and Dr Lanka Dissanayake discussed screening, treatment options, recovery and community support.
A patient and survivor session also featured personal experiences of diagnosis, treatment and recovery, with organisers aiming to encourage women to seek medical advice and screening at an earlier stage.
The hospital also highlighted its breast imaging services, including 2D digital mammography and 3D digital breast tomosynthesis using Hologic Selenia Dimensions and Hologic 3Dimensions systems.
According to Hemas Hospital Wattala, the technology is designed to provide detailed breast imaging while improving patient comfort and supporting lower-dose imaging.
The hospital said 3D breast imaging can assist clinicians in examining breast tissue in greater detail and detecting abnormalities that may be more difficult to identify using conventional imaging.
As part of the October 28 programme, members of the public were also offered free physical breast examinations at the hospital.
Hemas Hospitals said the Breastober initiative is intended to encourage more open discussion around breast health and promote earlier screening and diagnosis.
The symposium also highlighted the hospital’s broader breast-care pathway, combining screening, specialist consultations, surgical oncology and recovery support.
