Veteran Actor Sathischandra Edirisinghe’s Final Rites to Be Held Thursday

The final rites of veteran actor Sathischandra Edirisinghe will be held on Thursday at Borella General Cemetery.

The late actor’s body is scheduled to be taken to his residence on Wednesday (24) at 7:30 a.m. After religious observances in the morning, the funeral will take place at 5:00 p.m. at Borella General Cemetery.

Edirisinghe, who had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Thalawathugoda, passed away on the night of 22 December. His body is currently at a private funeral parlour in Borella. He was the brother of veteran singer Sunil Edirisinghe and was widely recognized for his immense contributions to the arts as both an actor and director.

Born on 10 February 1941 in Kelaniya, Patikirige Sathischandra Edirisinghe enjoyed a career spanning over half a century. In 1986, he earned acclaim for his role in Gamini Fonseka’s film Keti Waleegaya, where he portrayed a Sinhala youth in a performance lasting just 90 seconds. The following year, at the 1987 Sarasaviya Awards Festival, he received a Special Jury Award for his portrayal of a Buddhist monk.

Edirisinghe’s contributions to stage drama began in 1963 with his first production, Bakathapas, marking the start of a lifelong dedication to theatre and cinema. He was 84 years old at the time of his passing.

Remains of two males found washed ashore in Colombo
