Top Sri Lankan investigator Shani Abeysekara appointed CID Director

Top Sri Lankan investigator Shani Abeysekara has been appointed as the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Abeysekara, who was involved in investigating a number of high-profile cases, was appointed with the approval of the National Police Commission (NPC).

He replaces SSP Imesha Muthumala as the CID Director.

Shani Abeysekera had served as the CID Director but was removed from the post by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

He was later appointed as the Director of Crimes of the Sri Lanka Police by the Anura Kumara Disanayake Government.

Dissanayake has decided to investigate several crimes which were suspended by past Governments.

Abeysekera was involved in investigating some of the high-profile murders before he was removed by the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration. (Colombo Gazette)

Counting of ballot papers to begin at 8am on 6 August

The National Election Commission has announced that the counting of ballot papers of the General Election 2020 will commence at 08.00 a.m. on 06 August. Chairman of the Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the Commission hopes to announce the first results of the election at around 04.00 p.m. on the same day. Four PNB officers interdicted

Four officers attached to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) were interdicted today. The Police said the officers were interdicted following investigations conducted into their links with drug dealers. A Police Senior Inspector, two Sergeants, and a Police Constable were the interdicted officers. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had detained and questioned one officer on 25 June and the other three officers the following day, the Police added. (Colombo Gazette)
