Committee to be appointed to propose actions on UK sanctions

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has decided to appoint a committee to propose actions to be taken over the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on former Sri Lankan military commanders.

The Government said that the attention of the Cabinet of Ministers had been drawn on the decisions taken by the United Kingdom to impose sanctions on 04 Sri Lankan individuals recently.

Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to appoint a committee to submit a report with recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers on the further measures to be taken after studying the facts in the regard and to empower the committee to obtain the service of any officer/intellect deemed to have subject expertise in the relevant field and considered essential.

The committee will comprise of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Minister of Justice and National Integrity Attorney?at?Law Harshana Nanayakkara and Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara.

The UK recently imposed sanctions on former Sri Lankan military commanders Shavendra Silva, Wasantha Karannagoda and Jagath Jayasuriya as well as former LTTE member Karuna Amman over serious human rights violations and abuses committed during the civil war. (Colombo Gazette)

Body of male washed ashore in Ratmalana

Court rejects case filed by foreigner over passport

National anthem to be sung in Tamil at 75th Independence anniversary celebrations

The National anthem will be sung in Tamil at Sri Lanka’s 75th Independence anniversary celebrations next year, the Government said today.
