Police fire tear gas on joint opposition protest near Parliament

The Police fired tear gas on a joint opposition protest near Parliament today. The protest was staged by supporters of the joint opposition demanding the holding of the Local Government (LG) elections soon. The police were forced to close the road near Parliament as a result of the protest. However the police later used water cannons and?tear gas to disperse the protesters. (Colombo Gazette)

Envoy insists Udayanga not involved in Noel’s death

Russia?s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alexander Karchava today insisted that Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, is not involved in the murder of a Sri Lankan employee at the Sri Lankan embassy in Russia. Karchava said that a Russian National was arrested over the crime and he is now serving a jail term. Noel Ranaweera was killed in 2014 while serving at the Sri Lanka Embassy in Russia. Area around Beira Lake to be commercial center
