Amendments to Electricity Act withdrawn

Proposed amendments to the Electricity Act were withdrawn today when it was scheduled to be discussed in Parliament.

The Bill was before Parliament today but the Government announced that it had decided to withdraw the Bill.

The proposed amendments included reducing the powers vested with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) which was opposed by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Energy as well as other stakeholders.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa raised concerns over the Bill when Parliament met today.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella later told Parliament that the Government has decided to withdraw the Bill.

Parliament sessions were later adjourned till tomorrow.

Police say media has put child at risk

Police probe Kalpitiya bodies

The police are investigating the recovery of two unidentified bodies in Kalpitiya last evening, the police media unit said. According to the police the body of a 45 year old man and a 55 year old woman were recovered near the Thalawila beach. The police were earlier contacted regarding the two bodies seen in the area. The police media unit said that the bodies have been taken to the Kalpitiya hospital for identification. Further investigations are underway.

Grenades in Rajagiriya

The police found two unexploded hand grenades in Welikada, Rajagiriya this evening. According to the police the grenades were found behind a library in Rajagiriya. Investigations are underway to find who left the grenades behind the library and what the ultimate motive was. The library is operated by the Kotte Municipal Council.
