Six elephants killed in Sri Lanka train accident

Six elephants were killed in a train accident in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Railway department said.

The train operating between Batticaloa and Colombo crashed into a herd of elephants in Gal Oya.

The train had derailed following the accident.

The elephants had been crossing the track from a nearby forest when the accident occured.

According reports the elephants were aged 8, 15, and 20, with five of them being female.

Another elephant is said to be in critical condition and is receiving treatment. (Colombo Gazette)
