Police probe attempt to conceal evidence over Hatton bus tragedy

UPDATE: The Police are investigating an attempt to conceal evidence linked to the deadly accident in Hatton in which three people were killed and over 40 others sustained injuries.

The Police had recovered CCTV footage of the camera installed inside the bus which had reportedly been deleted remotely.

The driver of the bus had told the Police that the door of the driver’s seat had opened while he was driving and this caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

Earlier the Hatton Police had claimed that there was suspicion the driver had been on the phone causing the vehicle to lose control.

However, CCTV footage later recovered from inside the bus showed the door of the bus driver accidentally opening and this may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

A 14-year-old child was among the three victims while 40 others sustained injuries.

The bus was heading to Kandy from Hatton when it lost control and fell down the precipice on Saturday, the Sri Lanka Police said.

The child, a man and a woman were confirmed dead following the accident.

The driver of the bus is among those who sustained injuries in the accident and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

Hospital authorities said that some of the injured are in critical condition.

A Police investigation has been launched over the accident. (Colombo Gazette)

Four killed in Kurunegala fuel station blaze

Four people were killed and four others sustained injuries following a fire at a fuel station in Kurunegala. The Police said that a gas tank explosion caused the fire at the fuel station in Wehera, Kurunegala.
