FR petition seeking postponement of Presidential polls dismissed

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition seeking an order to postpone the Presidential Election was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

The court ordered that the petition be dismissed and Rs 500,000 to be paid by the petitioner.

The petitioner claimed that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was not properly passed in Parliament and therefore called for a referendum to ensure its proper passage.

The Election Commission and its members, the General Secretary of Parliament and the Attorney General had been named as respondents to the petition. (Colombo Gazette)
