Police say forced to use tear-gas

The police say they were forced to use tear-gas today to disperse students of the Sabaragamuwa University who had blocked the Colombo – Badulla road and had also injured 12 policemen. Police headquarters said that some 1000 – 1500 students took part in the protest over several demands including against the suspension of 5 students from the University. Court fines 40 householders

The Gangodawila Magistrate today imposed a Rs. 5000 fine on 40 householders in the Kohuwala area after the police charged them with having dengue mosquito breeding grounds, the police media unit said today. The police said that a special search operation for dengue mosquito grounds was carried out on 1560 houses in the Kohuwala area. Over 750 goats slaughtered

Over 750 goats were slaughtered at a religious festival in?Keerimalai, Jaffna today. According to the Jaffna based Uthayan newspaper, thousands of people took part in the Hindu ritual at the Karuhampanai?Narasima Wairavar Temple in Keerimalai. The festival began early this morning and 750 goats were slaughtered after prayers. The Uthayan newspaper reported that over 300 cockerels?were also killed as part of the ritual. (Colombo Gazette)
