Over 70 houses damaged in Batti

Strong winds lashed through Batticaloa last evening damaging at least 73 houses, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said today. Of the houses damaged some 20 houses were completely destroyed by the winds displacing several people. The DMC said that around 100 people were displaced by the incident and one child sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital. Over 15,000 unable to pay fine

A Sri Lankan official said Wednesday that over 15,000 prisoners are being detained as they were unable to pay fine. The official from the Prisons Department said on condition of anonymity that over the year 2011, 15,306 persons were sent to prison for their failure to pay fine. “This was more than the half of the total number of prisoners entering the prisons over the year,” the official said. Police to introduce SMS hotline

The police will introduce an SMS hotline from next month for the public to lodge urgent complaints, the police media unit said today. The police media unit said that the 119 emergency hotline which is used for such complaints is often congested or unreachable.
