Health workers to get second Covishield jab from tomorrow

Health workers will be given the second AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine from tomorrow.
State Minister Channa Jayasumana announced that the Government will commence the administration of the second jab of the vaccine from tomorrow.
Earlier, the Government had announced that the vaccination programme for the 2nd jab of the AstraZeneca vaccine will commence on 29 April.
However, the vaccination of the second jab was suspended?due to a shortage of AstraZeneca vaccines, as a result of the manufacturer, the Serum Institute of India, suspending delivery due to a rise in Covid cases in India.
However, following recent assurances by the institute that it will dispatch more vaccine doses in batches in the future, the Government had decided to commence the vaccination?of the second dose.
Out of the 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine initially provided to Sri Lanka from an order of 1.5 million doses, the Government is in possession of over 350,000 doses.
State Minister Sudharshini Fernandopulle said the stock in hand will be utilized to provide the second jab to frontline healthcare workers, and the Military and the Police.
Accordingly, the Government today commenced the vaccination of the second jab of the AstraZeneca vaccine on healthcare workers. (Colombo Gazette)
