Undersea explosion cause for tremor

Undersea explosions at the Colombo harbor caused minor tremors in parts of Fort this morning, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) said.

Several people in the Fort area had contacted the Disaster Management Center saying they felt a slight tremor today.

The Colombo Port later confirmed that the tremors were caused by the undersea explosions at the port which was carried out during construction work.

Officials at the port said that minor tremors may be felt during the day as a result of more controlled explosions to be carried out at sea.

Construction work is underway at the Colombo port as part of an expansion project.
