Navy obtains satellite data to detect foreign vessel with heroin

The Sri Lanka Navy says it obtained satellite data to detect another foreign vessel with heroin.

This is the second such foreign vessel to be detected by the Navy at sea in recent weeks.

Navy Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara said that the stateless vessel is to be brought ashore over the next few days.

He said that seven people were on the vessel at the time it was seized.

The Navy said that it was able to detect the vessel in the high seas, around 548 nautical miles (985km) off Sri Lankan shores and found approximately 260kg of heroin and 56kg of crystal methamphetamine.

The navy said that international information exchange and data analysis of satellite communications were used into good effect in this operation. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy arrests 78 people heading to Australia

The navy arrested 78 people while they were?attempting to travel to Australia illegally by boat, the navy media unit said. Navy Spokesperson Commander Indika Silva said that out of the 78 arrested, 17 were Sinhalese while 59 were Tamils. Silva said the illegal immigrants were arrested at 12.30 a.m., 65 miles off Kirinda and were taken to the Galle Harbour by Navy officials. Those arrested were then handed over to the Galle Police.

Soldier sentenced to death for Jaffna murders

A soldier was today sentenced to death over the murder of eight people in the year 2000 in Mirusuvil, Jaffna. The Colombo High Court sentenced the soldier to death after he was found guilty over the murders. Four others were acquitted over the case.
