Navy arrests 78 people heading to Australia

The navy arrested 78 people while they were?attempting to travel to Australia illegally by boat, the navy media unit said.

Navy Spokesperson Commander Indika Silva said that out of the 78 arrested, 17 were Sinhalese while 59 were Tamils.

Silva said the illegal immigrants were arrested at 12.30 a.m., 65 miles off Kirinda and were taken to the Galle Harbour by Navy officials.

Those arrested were then handed over to the Galle Police.

Visas issued for foreigners in Sri Lanka extended

The Department of Immigration and Emigration today announced that the visas issued for foreigners in Sri Lanka has been further extended. Accordingly, the validity period of all types of visas issued for foreigners in Sri Lanka have been extended for another period of 30 days with effect from 12th May 2020 to 11th June 2020. Champika and Welgama file petitions against polls

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) leader Patali Champika Ranawaka and former Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the gazette notification issued by the Election Commission to hold Parliamentary elections on 20 June.
