AG issues further advise on court proceedings

Attorney General (AG) President?s Counsel Dappula De Livera has issued further guidelines to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickremeratne on granting bail to remandees of minor offences.
The AG’s Coordinating Officer Nishara Jayaratne told the Colombo Gazette that the additional guidelines are being issued in view of overcrowding in prisons across the island.
She said the AG fears this could result in the spreading of the novel coronavirus within prisoners.
The Attorney General has pointed out that remandees in relation to other offences, excluding drug related offences, currently stands around 5000, Jayaratne said.
Earlier on 9 April, the AG had issued strict guidelines to the Acting IGP to be followed when moving court sessions to grant bail to remandees of drug offences. (Colombo Gazette)
