Nine arrested over fake news

Nine persons, including a woman, have been arrested so far on charges of spreading fake news on COVID- 19 via social media.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana said 2 individuals were arrested yesterday in the Angoda and Polgahawela areas.

A 35 year- old man was arrested in the Kelanimulla area in Angoda for spreading fake news on the Coronavirus on social media, he said.

The suspect, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has been remanded till 16 April after being produced in Court today.

DIG Rohana said a 43 year- old man was arrested in Polgahawela last night on charges of creating panic among the public by claiming that there were patients infected with COVID-19 admitted to the Polgahawela Hospital.

Steps are being taken to produce the suspect in court and take stringent legal action, he added. (Colombo Gazette)
