Two convicts on death row in Welikada stage protest

Two convicts on death row at the Welikada prison staged a protest on the roof of the prison today.

The two convicts demanded that they be set free after a murder convict was pardoned by President Maithripala Sirisena over the weekend.

Royal Park murder convict Jude Shramantha Anthony Jayamaha was given a Presidential pardon on Saturday.

The Prison?s Department said that he had been released after being granted the pardon.

The sister of Royal Park murder victim Yvonne Johnson yesterday demanded answers from President Maithripala Sirisena after the President pardoned the convict over the crime committed in 2005.

Yvonne Johnson?s sister Caroline Jonsson-Bradley, in a Facebook post yesterday, demanded to know why the President showed interest in the case.

The army has rejected allegations that some soldiers had been involved in stealing items from three Hindu temples in Batticaloa.
