Police fire tear gas and water cannons on protest

The Police fired tear gas and water cannons on university students protesting in Fort this evening.

The students blocked the main road and protested forcing the Police to fire water cannons and tear gas to disperse them.

However the university students returned and blocked the main road again near the Hilton Hotel and protested.

The Police fired another round of tear gas and dispersed the protesters.

The Police said that 26 students were later arrested for unruly behavior during the protest. (Colombo Gazette)

Chinese official has discussions on projects in Sri Lanka

A top Chinese official has had discussions on projects supported by China in Sri Lanka. Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou had talks in Colombo with several Government officials. Among those he met was Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva who termed the discussion as being “solid”.
