The Kelaniya University has been closed until further notice after students opposed new security measures introduced by the administration. However the Faculty of Medicine will continue to operate, the University administration said.

Female lawyer arrested for scratching cop released on bail

A female lawyer, who was arrested for scratching a female police constable, was released on bail. The lawyer was arrested outside the Supreme Court in Colombo. She had scratched the female police constable while being checked outside the Supreme Court. The Police arrested the lawyer but she was later released on bail. (Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lankan asylum seekers flown back from Australia

Twenty Sri Lankan asylum seekers were flown back to their home country after their boat was intercepted en route to Australia, the Australian media reported. The vessel, which was carrying at least one baby, was spotted last week in the Indian Ocean heading for the northwest coast, SBS quoted The Australian as reporting. The asylum seekers were detained for a few days on Christmas Island before being flown to Colombo on a Government charter jet on Wednesday after their asylum claims were rejec
