Lanka abstains from voting against death penalty

Sri Lanka last week abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly in favour of abolishing the death penalty. The draft resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty was adopted by a recorded vote of 111 in favour to 41 against, with 34 abstentions. According to Amnesty International Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Namibia went from a vote in favour to an abstention. Sri Lanka also abstained from voting for the draft resolution on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. The

Over 300 power pirates nabbed

Over 300 power pirates were nabbed last month, the Ministry of Power and Energy said. The Ministry said that the suspects caught illegally tapping electricity were imposed fines. In total the Ministry raked in Rs. 1.74 Million in fines last month from power pirates.

Police arrest 100 Chinese nationals

The police, in a coordinated effort with the Chinese police, arrested 100 Chinese nationals in Colombo and the suburbs yesterday over?telephone fraud. Police spokesman SSP Priyashantha Jayakody told the Colombo Gazette the arrests were made based on information provided by the Chinese police.
