Heavy rain and strong winds expected in most parts

Heavy rain and strong winds have been anticipated in most parts of the country. The Department of Meteorology said that rainfalls above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central and Northwestern provinces and in the Galle and Matara, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts tomorrow (Sunday). Wind speeds can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times across the island.

Mangala alerts UNESCO on threat to Sinharaja

Former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has alerted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the threat posed to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka. In a letter to Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, Samaraweera says the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka which was recognised as a World Heritage Property by UNESCO, in 1988, is under threat.
