New Prisons Commissioner appointed

A new Prisons Commissioner has been appointed, the Ministry of Justice announced. The Ministry said that T.M. Jayasiri Vijayanath Tennakoon was appointed as the new Commissioner General of Prisons following approval obtained from the cabinet. Tennakoon replaces outgoing Prisons Commissioner Nishan Dhanasinghe. The new Commissioner is being appointed at a time two hangmen are being recruited as President Maithripala Sirisena prepares to implement the death penalty. The appointment also comes

Court issues order against arresting Karannagoda

The Supreme Court today issued an order against moves by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to arrest former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda in connection to the case on the abduction of 11 youth. The order was given after a fundamental rights petition filed by Karannagoda was considered by the court today. Karannagoda was also ordered to appear before the CID to record a statement on Monday. The 11 youth had been abducted in Colombo and the suburbs between 2008 and 2009

Special Court orders release of Ali Roshan

The Special High Court today ordered the release of Niraj Roshan alias ?Ali Roshan? and 6 others over the illegal possession of four elephants and racketeering. Ali Roshan was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) last year over the elephant racket but was later granted bail. Today the court found that it had no jurisdiction to hear the case and so ordered the release of the suspects. (Colombo Gazette)
