CID commences investigations into Welikada prison riot

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has commenced investigations into the Welikada prison riot.

The riot in 2012 left 27 inmates dead and several injured.?The riot broke out during a search for illegal arms.

The Government had appointed a committee to investigate the riot and a report was compiled on the incident but it was not made public.

In January this year the Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka (HRCSL) recorded a statement from a journalist over the riot.

The statement was recorded from journalist?Kasun Pussewela after he had filed a petition at the?HRCSL.

Pussewela had sought an investigation into the incident saying?there was ample evidence to prosecute some people who were responsible for killing prisoners who took part in the riot.

The?HRCSL obtained written evidence from?Pussewela as well as video and photographic evidence. (Colombo Gazette)

US lawmakers write to Clinton on Sri Lanka

A group of 31 US lawmakers have, in a letter to U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, urged continued engagement with Sri Lanka based on the recently adopted UN Human Rights Council resolution. The U.S lawmakers say despite the initial steps towards reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka, they remain concerned that the Government of Sri Lanka still objects to taking the good faith steps necessary to implement both its obligations under the UNHRC Resolution and the LLRC Report.
