New Bill to reclaim stolen public funds and assets

A new Bill is to be submitted to Parliament to reclaim stolen public funds, a Minister said today.

Special Assignments Minister Sarath Amunugama said that while suspects are arrested for stealing state assets those assets, including public funds are never recovered.

The Minister said that there is a call by some members of the opposition to protect state institutions.

However he says those very people are accused of taking huge bribes to approve some deals when the former Government was in office.

Amunugama said the proposed Bill will not only seek legal action on those accused of stealing Government assets but also?reclaim those assets and funds.

The Minister said the Bill will also be submitted for cabinet approval in an attempt curb corruption. ?(Colombo Gazette)
