Police fire tear gas on mob near Katuwana police station

The Police fired tear gas on a protest near the Katuwana police station after the Police came under attack by the mob. The mob accused the Police of killing a man in the area but the Police denied the allegation. Angry residents pelted stones towards the Police and burnt tyres along the road. The Police Special Task Force was called in to protect the police station. The Police later fired tear gas to disperse the protesters. At least four policemen were reportedly injured in the incident.

Supreme Court decides order against Mahinda, cabinet will stay

The Supreme Court today decided that a Court of Appeal order issued against the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and against his cabinet from holding office, will stand. The Supreme Court also decided that the case will be heard further next month. The United National Front (UNF) said that the order means Rajapaksa cannot be Prime Minister and so the former cabinet must be reinstated.
