Government, opposition in war of words on LG polls

The Government and the opposition argued in Parliament today on the failure to hold the Local Government (LG) elections.

Opposition Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena accused the Government of intentionally postponing the elections.

However Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Faiszer Musthapha, insisted that there was no attempt to intentionally postpone the election.

He said that an issue on delimitation had resulted in the polls being postponed.

Minister Faiszer Musthapha said that once the issues on delimitation are resolved, steps will be taken to hold the election. (Colombo Gazette)

AG concludes action on 19,091 criminal cases

The Attorney General?s Department has concluded action on over 19,000 criminal cases between January 2019 and May 2020, the Attorney General?s Department said today. State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the Coordinating Officer of Attorney General Dappula de Livera, said that action has been concluded on 19,091 criminal cases during this period. Special flight brings back Sri Lankans stranded in Pakistan

A special SriLankan Airlines flight brought back a group of Sri Lankans stranded in Pakistan today. The Sri Lankans had sought to return to Sri Lanka when the coronavirus pandemic spread around the world. SriLankan Airlines flight UL-1282 arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning with around 130 Sri Lankans onboard. The passengers were subjected to PCR tests on arrival and were awaiting the results. (Colombo Gazette)

Complaint filed against SLBC with Elections Commission

A complaint has been filed against the State owned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) with the National Elections Commission. In the complaint, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said that SLBC was used to promote Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is a candidate at the upcoming Parliamentary election.
