Sri Lanka yet to identify location for nuclear power plant

Sri Lanka is yet to identify a suitable location to set up a nuclear power plant, the Power and Energy Ministry said today.
Deputy Minister of Power and Energy Ajith P. Perera said that Sri Lanka is working with the?International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to identify a suitable location for the plant.
Perera said that Sri Lanka has however not taken a final decision on having a nuclear plant despite looking for appropriate land.
He said that the sensitive nature of the issue, including environmental concerns, would mean the process to decide on a nuclear power plant will take longer than usual.
Sri Lanka is currently depending on hydro power, thermal and coal power and Perera said that as an alternative Sri Lanka is also looking at?Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
The Deputy Minister also said that there was no threat to Sri Lanka from the nuclear power plants in India.
Perera said that Sri Lanka has the capability to monitor any possible threat from nuclear power plants in the region. (Colombo Gazette)
