India to supply 500 MW electricity to Lanka via sub-sea cables

In a bid to promote Sri Lanka?s growth, the Indian government plans to supply 500 MW of power to the country. The transmission will?take place through network sub-sea power cables, India’s Financial Express reported.

Union Power Secretary PK Pujari said that India currently supplies power to Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar and imports power from Bhutan.

India had thought of supplying power to Sri Lanka earlier as well, however, due to lack of technology then, it was not viable.

?At that time, the technology wasn?t very good and it was costly. Now, the technology has improved drastically. European countries use it extensively to import renewable energy. So, for Sri Lanka, we are re-examining it, to see if it is possible to lay the submarine cable. This is a good technology at a reasonable cost,? he said.

According to New York Times, the cost of putting a cable under water can be lower than burying cables on land. (Colombo Gazette)
