President says GSP plus will be given by EU in weeks

President Maithripala Sirisena says the GSP plus trade concession will be given to Sri Lanka by the EU in a few weeks.

He said this was communicated to the Government by EU member countries recently.

The President made this announcement at the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) May Day rally in Galle today.

Sri Lanka lost the GSP plus trade concession after the former Government failed to address human rights concerns.

The new Government however worked with the EU and put in place a system to ensure the human rights concerns are addressed.

Any successful application for GSP Plus requires?compliance with 27 International Conventions, including the International Covenant on Civil?and Political Rights (ICCPR), the Convention Against Torture and the Convention on the?Rights of the Child. Sri Lanka has signed and ratified all these conventions. ?(Colombo Gazette)
