Zeid says he will listen to all communities in Sri Lanka

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra?ad Al Hussein says he will be having talks with representatives of all communities in Sri Lanka and will listen to what they have to say.

Zeid Ra?ad Al Hussein arrived in Sri Lanka today?and was met by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the airport and later he had talks with the Minister at the Foreign Ministry.

?I am delighted to be in Sri Lanka. I have been looking forward to coming,? Zeid told reporters in a brief statement as he began meetings in Colombo.

He said that he will be having talks with the highest officials in the Government and also representatives of all communities.

?I will be listening to everything they have to say and look forward to very constructive discussions in the days to come,? he said.

The High Commissioner will visit Jaffna and Trincomalee tomorrow and on Monday?where he will meet with the Governors and Chief Ministers of the Northern and Eastern Provinces respectively.

He will also have talks with families of the war victims and local civil society members.?(Colombo Gazette)

Land mine blast in Jaffna

A land mine explosion in Jaffna today injured a mine clearence worker attached to a foreign agency, reports from Jaffna said. The explosion had taken place at Nagar Kovil when land mines were being cleared from a marked area. An employee of Halo Trust sustained facial injuries in the explosion and was taken to hospital. He was admitted to the Jaffna hospital for treatment. (Colombo Gazette)

Rift in TNA over CM post

A rift has arisen in the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) as to who should be nominated as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Northern Provincial Council elections. There are reports that while one section of the TNA wants TNA General Secretary Mavai Senathirajah to be nominated there are others who are backing former?Supreme Court Judge C.V.Vigneswaran for the post. At least two rounds of discussions have been held among the alliance members on the issue but a consensus has not been reached.
