SC dismisses petition by DEW on UPFA list

The Supreme Court today dismissed the petition filed by Community Party leader DEW Gunasekera on the National List candidates nominated to Parliament by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Leftist parties had last month?raised strong objections to the members appointment to Parliament by the UPFA through the National List.

The Leftist Parties had said that?the UPFA members appointed to Parliament through the National List, do not have the backing of the public or Parliament.

The Leftist Parties also noted that appointing defeated candidates to Parliament is a violation of Parliament democracy. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy recovers cache of explosives in Mullivaikkal

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has recovered a cache of explosives from a private development site in Mullivaikkal, Mullaitivu. The explosives were recovered during a special search operation conducted yesterday (15), the Navy media unit said today. The Navy said the cache of explosives were found among rubble at the site and it is suspected that these items may have been left behind by the LTTE during the war. Motorists to be fined if traffic lane law violated

A fine will be imposed on motorists who violate the traffic lane law, the Police said. Motorists found to have violated the law will be charged a fine of Rs. 2000. The Police said the charge will be implemented from tomorrow (17). The bus priority lane was reintroduced on Monday (14) centering four main roads of the Colombo City and suburbs.
