Two men arrested with foreign currency

Two people were arrested by the customs department at the airport today?with foreign currency valued at over Rs. 7 million.

The customs department said that the Sri Lankan males, aged 34 and 29, are residents of Watawala and Ragala.

They were arrested by the customs department with US$ 22,000, Euro 25,900 and Swiss Franc 4,500.00 equivalent to Rs. 7,185,000.00 which was concealed in their baggage.

The two men had attempted to take the money out to Singapore on a SriLankan airlines flight.

State schools in Western, Sabaragamuwa to remain closed

All state schools in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces will remain closed till Friday, the Education Ministry said today. The Education Ministry said that the schools will be closed as the flood situation had not yet returned to normalcy.

Over 150 now confirmed killed, over 100 still missing

The death toll from the floods and landslides crossed the 150 mark with over 100 still missing. The Disaster Management Centre said that 151 people have been confirmed dead as of this evening and 111 are missing. Search and rescue operations are continuing around the country with the assistance of the military. The Disaster Management Centre said that 252 houses have been estimated as being fully damaged and 1,786 partially damaged.
