Halal report to Cabinet

The Cabinet subcommittee appointed to look into the halal issue will submit its final report to Cabinet soon, head of the committee and senior Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said.
He said the report is almost complete and once finalized it will be presented to Cabinet to decide on the next step.
Committee member, Minister A.H.M Fowzie meanwhile said that a final round of discussions will be held by the committee before the report is completed and handed over to Cabinet.
He however said he was unaware of the contents of the report at its current stage.
Another committee member, Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera said that the report cannot go to Cabinet before a final discussion is held.
?We will need to meet one last time for a discussion and only then can the report be given to Cabinet,? he said.
The subcommittee was formed after some groups raised opposition to the issuing of the halal certification by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU).
The ACJU had in February submitted a set of proposals on the halal certification issue to the Cabinet subcommittee.

UNP accuses troops of jail massacre

Sri Lanka’s main opposition party Sunday demanded an independent inquiry into a prison riot that left 27 convicts dead, alleging many were shot by security forces in a cold-blooded “massacre”. Moragahahena clash injures 12

A clash at Moragahahena last night injured 12 people including three policemen. The clash had taken place after a mob caught a wanted criminal and handed him over to the police. A group linked with the criminal had attacked the mob resulting in a clash between both groups. The police had gone to the area to bring the situation under control. However the group which was supporting the criminal attacked the police. The injured people were admitted to hospital for treatment.
