Police probe telephone threats

The police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and the Terrorist Investigations Department (TID) are conducting?separate?investigations into threats posed to businessman and individuals by unidentified callers who demand ransom over the phone.
A statement by the police media unit said that several complaints have been?received?where unidentified people?telephone?businessman and individuals and demand money after threatening them with death.
The police said that some people, out of fear, transfer the money demanded by the suspects and fail to assist police investigations.
“Some people make the money?transfer?to the account number given by the caller without conducting inquiries into who is calling and if the threat is genuine,” the police said.
The police urged the public not to fall prey to such telephone calls and to report the matter to the nearest police station or call?119, 2433333, 2422176, 2320141-5, 2321839, 2685151, 2662311 or 2421111. (Colombo Gazette)
