Sri Lanka says no to US resolution

The government today informed the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that it will object to any resolution which will be submitted on Sri Lanka at the ongoing session in Geneva.
In a right of reply to the comments made by the US?Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Esther Brimmer earlier today, the Sri Lankan delegation said it was?surprised?by the reference she made on Sri Lanka.
Brimmer told the 22^nd?session of the UN Human Rights Council today that a new resolution will be submitted to the Council to make sure the international community monitors progress and to again offer assistance on outstanding reconciliation and accountability issues in Sri Lanka.
She noted that the work of the Council will not be done as long as Sri Lanka falls short of implementing even the recommendations of its own Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) or in addressing the underlying sources of its longstanding ethnic conflict.
The Sri Lankan delegation however said it will object to any?unfair, biased, unprincipled and unjust approach that may be adopted by this Council towards the protection and promotion of Human Rights of Sri Lanka
Priyanga Wicremasinghe, Counsellor of the Sri Lanka Permanent Mission in Geneva said Sri Lanka should be encouraged in its reconciliation process, rather than being singled out for any disproportionate attention in the Council.
“It is especially so, at a time when having overcome a 30-year long terrorist conflict, as well as having averted what many feared would be a ?humanitarian catastrophe?, Sri Lanka is implementing a comprehensive process of reconciliation involving all communities based on the National Action Plan on the implementation of the recommendations of the LLRC,” she added.?(Colombo Gazette)
