Heroin inside a tennis ball at Kandy prison

A tennis ball which was found in the Bogambara prison in Kandy today was filled with heroin packets.
The authorities said that the ball had been thrown into the prison by an agent believed to be involved in supplying heroin to the prison inmates.
Investigations revealed that the inmate at the prison who was supposed to the collect the tennis ball had not been in the?vicinity?where the ball fell.
Another prisoner had seen the ball and picked it up and handed it over to the prison authorities.
The prison authorities cut open the ball and found 196 heroin packets worth over Rs. 58,000.
Further investigations are underway.

Fire in Balangoda kills man and daughter

A 50 year-old man and his 19 year old daughter have died in a fire that broke out in a store in Balangoda early this morning. The Police said the man, along with his wife and two children, had resided in a portion of the shop. Pharmacies have been instructed not to issue medicines without prescriptions. The Health Ministry has informed pharmacies to strictly follow the directives. Pharmacies around the island are now open daily, except Pharmacies in the areas designated as high-risk areas as a result of the spread of the coronavirus, including Colombo.
