Driver assaulted after child dies

The driver of a lorry was assaulted by area residents after the vehicle killed a child crossing at the zebra crossing in warakapola this morning.

According to the police media unit the 6 year old child was crossing the road to go to school when the accident took place.

The child was crossing the road near the school when the lorry ran over him. The child was rushed to the Warakapola hospital with serious injuries.

The police said that the child died on admission to hospital.

Following the accident area residents had assaulted the driver of the lorry. The lorry is attached to the Anuradhapura railway department.

The police said that the driver was admitted to hospital with police protection.

Commission on missing meets in Jaffna from Friday

The Presidential commission on missing persons will hold sittings in the Jaffna District from Friday, the commission said in a statement. The commission said that public sittings will be held over a six day period from Friday. Members of the commission will hold public sittings in Jaffna, Nallur, Vadamarachi and Vallikamam. Government insists Mahinda’s security not cut

The Government today insisted that the security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has not been reduced.
