Over 300 election related complaints

The Elections Department has received over 300 polls related complaints since the day campaigning began for the September provincial council elections.

According to the department 305 complaints were received of which 252 were related to violating elections laws.

Most complaints were from Anuradhapura totaling 83 while Kegalle recorded 42 complaints, Batticaloa 37, Ratnapura 34 and Ampara 64.

Meanwhile the police elections unit said that it had received 52 complaints of election related violence.

Head of the unit Gamini Navaratne said that 44 people have also been arrested.

He also said that so far the run up to the elections in three provinces to be held next month have been largely peaceful. ? (Colombo Gazette)

Army says screening issues of UN Peace Keepers will be resolved

The Army today said that it was confident the screening issues of UN Peace Keepers to be deployed from Sri Lanka will be resolved. Passenger arrested at BIA with heroin, ice and hashish

The?Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) arrested a passenger at the?Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake with?heroin, ice and hashish. The passenger was arrested while attempting to smuggle the items into the country. A resident of Kankesanthurai, the passenger had arrived from Chennai when he was detained by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau at the airport.
