More kids being abandoned

The police say more and more children are being abandoned by their parents over various reasons around the country.

According to the police media unit 206 children below the age of 18 were abandoned by their mothers last year while this year the figure was at 26 for January alone.

The police warned that under local laws anyone found guilty of abandoning a child can face up to 20 years in jail.

In the latest incident a three day old child was found abandoned behind a hotel in Matara yesterday.

Ants had bitten the baby and the child is now receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Matara hospital.

Among the reasons behind mothers abandoning their babies is unwanted pregnancies and poverty, the police media unit said. (Colombo Gazette)?

Maithripala’s appeal against Easter Sunday case rejected
