Shavendra removed from UN group

Sri Lanka’s deputy U.N. ambassador has been dropped from a group advising Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on payment to troops participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations, the Associated Press reported today.

According to the report, the group’s chair, former U.N. deputy secretary-general Louise Frechette, said in a statement Wednesday that after consulting other members she had advised Major General Shavendra Silva “that his participation is not appropriate or helpful.”

Silva was a top commander during the final stages of the country’s civil war.

Frechette gave no further explanation, but Silva headed Division 58, which was named in a U.N. report in connection with alleged war crimes.

Mahasohon Balakaya’s Amith Weerasinghe further remanded

The leader of the?Mahasohon Balakaya,?Amith Weerasinghe and several others were today ordered to be further remanded over the violence in Digana, Kandy. Weerasinghe and 33 others were order by court to be further remanded until June 11th when they were presented before court today. The suspects were arrested and placed in remand following the violence in Kandy targeting Muslims.?(Colombo Gazette)

Railway technical services workers instructed to report for duty

Railway technical services workers have been instructed to report for duty or lose their jobs. The Railway Technical Services Trade Union Committee launched a 48-hour token strike from 4.00pm today over three demands. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation warned that all casual, assigned and contract workers of the Railway technical services who fail to report for duty would be considered as?having vacated their posts.
