Third Session of the 9th Parliament declared open

The Third Session of the 9th Parliament was declared open by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today.

The President was received in front of Parliament with a Tri Force Guard of Honor.

Only the National Flag was hoisted and not the President’s flag.

The arrival of the Members of Parliament took place first, followed by the arrival of the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayaka welcomed the President at the main steps of the Parliament building.

The Speaker and the Secretary General of Parliament escorted the President to the Parliament building along with the Serjeant-at-Arms, Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms and Assistant Serjeant-at-Arms.

The students of Devi Balika College, Colombo lined up for the recital of the Jayamangala Gatha at the main entrance of the Parliament Building in welcoming the President. (Colombo Gazette)

Sea cucumber being smuggled to Sri Lanka seized

About 200 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered species, worth about Indian Rs 50 lakh and meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, was seized by marine police from a boat off Mandapam in Rameswaram, the Press Trust of India reported. Three of the five persons in the boat were arrested, while two managed to escape, police said. A hunt was on to nab them, they said.
