Accepting applications for passports temporarily suspended

Accepting applications for passports has been temporarily suspended, the Department of Immigration and Emigration said.

The Department says the move is as a result of a computer system malfunction.

The move drew strong protests from the public who had already gathered at the Department today (Thursday).

Services were affected on Tuesday as well as a result of a breakdown in the computer system of the Immigration and Emigration Department.

The Department had appealed to the public not to visit its head office yesterday (May 04) for non-essential services owing to the breakdown.

However, services were restored later in the day as the issue had been resolved. (Colombo Gazette)

Mohan, Anuradha assume duties

Military defends killings during prison riot

Sri Lanka’s military defended its soldiers who have been accused of massacring prisoners during a jail riot last week, saying the inmates were heavily armed and posed a public danger.
