The US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power visited Jaffna today and had talks with Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran and several others.
She discussed the current human rights situation in the North and other related matters. She also met the Northern Province Governor and discussed development plans for the North.
She also to met with members of the local press corps, including by visiting the headquarters of Uthayan newspaper, which was targeted during the war.
Ambassador Power also participated in the inauguration of a new wing of Osmania College, which suffered significant damage during the conflict, as well as tour the Jaffna Library, where she announced U.S. support for the local restoration of ancient Tamil manuscripts.
During her visit to Sri Lanka?Ambassador Power was to highlight the United States? commitment to strengthening the bilateral partnership, and underscore U.S. support for the country?s efforts toward reconciliation, accountability, and lasting peace in the aftermath of a devastating civil war.
