Prasanna instructs Police to ensure free movement of essential services

Minister of Public Security and Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga has instructed the Police to ensure essential services have free movement during protests and demonstrations.

He also said that public transport services should be maintained without any hindrance.

The Minister issued the instructions in a letter to the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security.

The Minister noted that at times vehicles transporting tourists, as well as ambulances and school vans have been obstructed as a result of protests.

He said that the Police must take steps to ensure these services operate without any hindrance.? (Colombo Gazette)

IOM plans more assistance to flood and landslide-hit Sri Lanka

The UN Migration Agency IOM said Tuesday that it plans to provide 3,700 shelter repair kits, 5,000 non-food relief item kits and 250 temporary shelters to assist the worst flood-affected areas in Sri Lanka, the Xinhua news agency reported. IOM said it would seek funding from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund, and the intervention would help an estimated 74,750 people. Heavy flooding, landslides and flash floods have affected some 684,000 people in south and central Sri Lanka.
