Speaker to obtain legal advise on case against COPE

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told Parliament today he will obtain legal advise on the case filed in the Supreme Court on the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).

COPE member Bimal Ratnayake said that COPE members have received details of the case filed against COPE on the treasury bond issue.

Ratnayake said that court cannot put pressure on COPE since COPE is a Parliament body.

However he said COPE members are not scared of going before court to make statements on the issue. (Colombo Gazette)

Government rejects concerns over Mirijjawila oil refinery

The Government today rejected concerns raised over the proposed Mirijjawila oil refinery project. Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrema told Parliament that the Oman company is going ahead with the project. Garuda Indonesia flight makes emergency landing in Sri Lanka

A Garuda Indonesia flight made an emergency landing in Sri Lanka today. The flight with at least 338 passengers onboard made an emergency landing at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. The flight was en route to Jeddah from Jakarta when it made an emergency landing in Sri Lanka due to low cabin pressure. (Colombo Gazette)
